Personal History and Background

I grew up in a small town in central Texas with a love of nature. I learned the word herpetology when I was about nine after discovering ground skinks for the first time. I kept coming back to the idea throughout high school and was disappointed when I could not major in Herpetology as an Undergraduate.

I ended up double majoring in Biology and Environmental Studies and minoring in Studio Art at Southwestern University. For my majors, I conducted research on the ecology and conservation efforts for local salamanders (the Georgetown Salamander).  Although minors don't usually have a focus, I spent most of my time on ceramics. I enjoy using artwork as a way to start a conversation about science and conservation issues.

When I moved to Georgia for graduate school at the University of Georgia, I also rediscovered a passion for dance. I started taking ballet classes again and learned how to ballroom and swing dance. Social dancing and the community of social dancers are one of the best parts of my life.

I developed my passion for teaching at UGA but it really started at SU when I got to TA for an astronomy class. The relationships I developed with faculty at SU fueled my desire to work at a small liberal arts institution. I took teaching courses and workshops at UGA and learned more about the science of learning and how to become a more effective teacher.

Teaching workshops and courses (along with some personal experiences) ignited my interest in diversity and inclusion in the classroom. Although I tend to be most aware of gender and sexual diversity representation, I am working on ways to include all kinds of diversity. This effort is focused on students themselves and providing research done by a variety of people who can serve as role models. Anyone can do science, and representation matters.
