Diversity in the Classroom
I have recently gotten interested in inclusive teaching and celebrating diversity in the classroom. There are many simple strategies to be more inclusive in the classroom such as careful word choices and creating a sense of community in the classroom. I am primarily aware of how to be more inclusive for gender and sexual diversity but am actively working on becoming more considerate of all types of diversity. A first step to inclusion is awareness and I strive to not only increase my own awareness but also increase the awareness and empathy of my students.

One thing I am still trying to figure out is: How to continue to advance and teach science without unintentionally celebrating or perpetuating the oppressive culture created by some of its predecessors? And how to show students not only research results but the people behind the work, who all have unique stories and can serve as role models. How can I show students there are successful scientists just like them?
